Maui has long been known as the windsurfing capital of the world and the epicenter of that world is Hookipa Beach Park on Maui’s north shore.

Just east of Paia and before you get to Maliko Gulch and the turn-off to Haiku on th Hana Highway you will find Hookipa and you won’t be able to missit because the road passes right by the shoreline line here just above the beach, so that even from the road as you pass by you will have a great view of the whole of Hookipa Bay.

But play safe and turn off into the car lots at the beach park and take time to admire the view and the action on the water. If the wind is blowing the windsurfers will be out on the water and there will usually be some wave action at most times of the year.

The best action is of course in the winter when the big swells from far off storms thousands of miles arrive on maui’s nrth shore to create some of the biggest waves in the world. Combine that with strong trade winds and it is easy to see why many of the world’s top windsurfers ensure that make time to spend their winter months in Maui, so that they can train on some of the most challenging waves in the world.

Take  a look at this video, introduced by the UK’s top international windsurfer Robbie Swift, to see some of the great action you can witness when you visit Ho’okipa Beach when the waves are up and the wind is blowing. Enjoy!
