WAILUKU: The Mayor’s Office of Maui County is an active member of one of Maui’s Native Flora and Fauna Projects to Save the Seabirds on the island.
The SOS (Save Our Seabirds) Program partnership includes the Maui Electric Company, Haleakala National Park, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (the Division of Forestry and Wildlife), as well as the County of Maui.
Together, all these different agencies will be working to try and raise awareness about seabird groundings and how the general public can help these birds to ensure their protection. For the endangered Hawaiian Petrel or Ua‘u, every individual that is saved is extremely important to the survival of the whole species.
An informational Save the Seabirds brochure has been created to provide guidance to Maui residents when a grounded seabird is found and it includes all the important phone numbers to report the incident and full instructions on how to properly care for the bird until help arrives to rescue it.
