Lone Surfer Paddles Stand-Up Paddle Board Around Maui
June 17, 2009 by admin · 2 Comments
Top windsurfer and Kanaha Kai windsurfing shop owner, Bart de Zwart recently completed an epic voyage on his stand-up paddle board that took him all the way around the coastline of the island of Maui.
The Stand-up Paddle Board or SUP is the basis of a new popular sport throughout all the Hawaiian Islands and this was the type board that Bart used to paddle for a total of over 38 hours over about 3 days around Maui.
Bart said he did it as a challenge as nobody had ever done it before and also so he could prove that it could be done.
This truly was a feat of endurance and although the paddle was enjoyable it was a lot of hard work!
For full details of the story and additional photos and comments from Bart just checkout his Maui Windsurf Blog to see how the trip unfolded and exactly where he went around the coast of Maui.
In the blog Bart documents everything that happened on his stand-up paddle board trip, including what he saw (turtles, whales, sharks and dolphins) and his battle against 20 mph head winds!
Checkout the video above that Bart has produced which gives you a nice summary of his unique voyage.

Stand-up paddling is one of the easiest water sports to get into on Maui as there is lots of gear available to rent and the ocean is always nearby.
If you think you’d like to try it out (SUP, but not all the way around Maui!) just visit Bart at his Kanaha Kai Maui Windsurfing Shop as he has the same types of board he used on his trip for you to rent.
The other great thing about renting from Bart is that his shop is very close to Kanaha Beach Park, which is a great place to learn stand-up paddling.
Bart used a Starboard 12′ 2″ long, 26 3/4″ wide SUP board with a Powerex Paddle to circumnavigate Maui.
And of course he also took a load of essential supplies with him on the board to ensure he would have everything he needed for his 3 day trip around the island.
Bart started his SUP voyage at 8am from the shore at Kanaha Beach Park on Wednesday May 27th 2009 and completed his paddle on Saturday May 30th at 11 am back at the same beach in Kanaha.
Well done Bart!
